What Are Yellow Petunias?

Most modern petunias descend from the Petunia axillaris, also known as the large white petunia, and the Petunia integrifolia, the violet petunia. These initial hybrids were produced in Germany and England in the early 1800s, and their hybridization proved so stable and popular that botanists refer to them as P. hybrida.

Petunia is the genus of 20 species of flowering plants of South American origin in the family Solanaceae and the subfamily Petunioideae. Petchoa is a hybrid genus that is derived from crossing Calibrachoa and Petunia.

There are a few basic petunia hybrids, like the Grandiflora, multiflora, milliflora, doubles, waves, surfinias, supertunias, cascadias, and petitunias. Each hybrid has its own characteristics that are unique to them, and some have been introduced somewhat recently.

Here are a few care tips –

1. Petunias require regular watering, at least weekly, and as much sunlight as possible to be at peak performance.

2. Petunias can tolerate cooler weather but are not frost tolerant. Wait until the earth stops frosting over to plant them.

3. Some varieties of petunias require frequent deadheading, such as floribundas and older Grandiflora varieties like the Aladdin series.

4. Monthly feeding will give petunias the energy they need to stay in bloom.

5. Petunias enjoy a slightly acidic soil pH.

6. Some varieties of petunias can be pummeled and destroyed by rain. Choose weather-resistant varieties.

7. Pests often flock to weeds and decaying plant material, so keep the planting area weeded and rake up fallen plant debris to keep harmful insects away from your petunias.
